02 / Field manual

A small hole. A whole world beneath.

What ice fishing is

Ice fishing means angling through a hole in naturally frozen water. Malaysia’s tropical lakes do not develop the seasonal ice needed for this activity. Our Malaysian editorial home explores winter traditions in colder regions.

How a session works

Check local access rules and current ice advice, go with experienced companions, assess the surface and drill only where permitted. Clear loose ice, lower a line to the chosen depth and keep the area tidy.

Essential equipment

An auger makes the hole; a short rod helps detect subtle movement. An insulated shelter reduces wind exposure. Sonar can show depth and fish activity, but cannot establish ice safety. Carry personal flotation, ice picks and a throw line.

Techniques & species

Gentle vertical jigging adds movement to a small lure. Pauses let you watch the line for changes. Perch, trout, pike and walleye occur in different cold-water fisheries; local rules determine species, tackle and catch limits.

Reading the season

Winter timing depends on latitude, elevation and recent weather. Early ice and late thaw demand particular caution. Use current local guidance rather than assuming a month guarantees suitable conditions.

Your first outing

Begin with a short daylight session and experienced local support. Practise handling gear on dry land, keep hands warm and secure hooks. Follow licence requirements, handle fish carefully and take all litter home.

03 / Before the first step

The ice sets the limits.

No ice is completely safe.

Appearance, a photograph or another person’s tracks cannot establish safety. Stay on shore when conditions are uncertain.

Thickness is only one factor

Minnesota DNR advises at least 4 inches (about 10 cm) of new, clear ice before considering activity on foot. This is not a guarantee. Strength varies across a lake; old, thawing or white ice requires a different assessment. Do not use this figure for vehicles. Follow local authorities and check repeatedly.

Cold-water readiness

Wear suitable personal flotation and accessible ice picks. Travel with companions, leave a route and return time with someone ashore, and carry a protected phone. Keep dry clothing in a waterproof bag.

Equipment check

Take a throw line, whistle, headlamp, spare power, traction aids, warm layers and a first-aid kit. Keep emergency equipment accessible. Use only suitable shelter heaters and follow ventilation and carbon-monoxide precautions.

If someone falls through

Call local emergency services immediately and give precise location details. Do not run onto weak ice. From a secure position, reach or throw flotation or a line. If immersed, control breathing, use ice picks to regain the surface and roll away from the opening; seek urgent help and warmth.

Weather & route

Check wind, visibility, temperature changes and local warnings. Avoid inlets, outlets, currents, pressure ridges and unfamiliar ice. Turn back early if weather changes or the route becomes unclear.

Recording on the ice

Assign someone to watch conditions while another records. Keep cables away from walking routes and holes. Do not use isolating headphones while moving; keep hands free and stop recording whenever safety needs attention.

Reference: Minnesota DNR ice thickness guidance. Follow the authority responsible for the lake you visit.
